With the links of Carnoustie baring its teeth in 2024, the Senior Open will return to Sunningdale for the first time since 2021. Wales’, Stephen Dodd was victorious four years ago and the course is always a firm favourite.
Steeped in history, the Berkshire club held the Curtis Cup in 2024 and regularly hosts Championships of note.
KJ Choi’s impressive 10 under total at the tough Angus course last year saw hi win his first Senior Major. He will no doubt be looking to add to that this year.
Four Qualifying Venues for the 2025 Senior Open have now been confirmed, giving hopefuls the opportunity to earn their place in Europe’s only Senior Major taking place at Sunningdale later this year.
Bearwood Lakes, Burhill, Camberley Heath and Sandy Lodge will host qualifying events on Monday July 21, with The Senior Open being held at Sunningdale later that week from July 24-27. Traditionally, in excess of 500 competitors have attempt to earn a spot in The Senior Open in the customary qualifying events.
Nestled in the Berkshire countryside, Bearwood Lakes was designed by Martin Hawtree and weaves through 50 acres of natural lakes and woodland, enhancing the beauty and challenge of the layout. The venue will also host Regional Qualifying for The 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush.
The New Course at Burhill has also previously hosted Regional Qualifying for The Open and, like Bearwood Lakes, also hosted qualifying for The Senior Open when it was last played at Sunningdale in 2021. The River Mole meanders through the course, which opened in 2001, which is protected by strategic bunkering and a number of water hazards.
The Harry Colt-designed course at Camberley Heath is set in 135 acres of heathland and opened in 1913. King George VI was an honorary member, and the opening drive was taken by HRH Prince Albert of Schleswig Holstein.
Founded in 1910, Sandy Lodge was designed by six-time Open Champion Harry Vardon and is a windswept course, often described as an inland links, making use of the site’s natural terrain and foliage and strategic bunkers.
To be eligible for entry into The Senior Open, players must be either male Professionals with a current Tour affiliation or PGA Membership, or male Amateurs with an exact handicap index of 0.4 (scratch) or lower under the World Handicap System, or the scheme adopted by the recognised authority controlling golf in their country.
Information on entering The Senior Open will follow shortly.
