The Staysure Legends Tour welcomed a Major champion to its ranks last week, as Henrik Stenson made his debut at the Barbados Legends hosted by Ian Woosnam.

One of the most recognisable figures of the modern era, the 2016 Open Champion arrived at the spectacular Apes Hill course for his first competitive appearance on the Staysure Legends Tour, adding further quality to a field that continues to grow in strength.

Stenson finished the week in a tie for 20th place on four-under-par, a solid return as he begins this new chapter.

“It’s been a really enjoyable week,” said Stenson. “Barbados is a lovely place and we stayed on site, which made it even better. The biggest thing I’ll take from it is seeing all the guys again — players I spent 15 to 20 years out on Tour with. Some I haven’t seen in five years, others closer to 20, so there were a lot of familiar, happy faces. It’s been more fun than I anticipated.”

After time away from consistent competition, Stenson acknowledged the work still ahead as he looks to build momentum through the season.

“There have been some challenges off the golf course over the last few years, which has led to a bit of inconsistency in practice,” he said. “Over the next couple of months I’ll be looking to put some time into the game, get some good work done and see where it takes me. It was always going to be a backloaded year for me, so there’s no real rush — I’ll have periods where I can really focus on playing and improving.”

Stenson’s debut week also offered the chance to combine competition with family time, enjoying everything the Barbados setting has to offer.

“It’s been a nice way to come back into it,” he added. “I had the family with me this week and we stayed in a lovely townhouse up by the 18th. It’s been a mix of some good rounds, a bit of work, but also taking in the scenery and enjoying Barbados.”

While the week marked a positive return, the Swede was clear about the level required to contend on the Staysure Legends Tour.

“As in any golf tournament, if you want to be up there competing for the top spots, you’ve got to perform,” he said. “There are some guys out here playing really solid golf, so if I want to compete with them, I’ve got some work to do.”

Stenson’s career has been shaped by competing at the very highest level, most notably his victory at The Open Championship in 2016, where a final-round 63 at Royal Troon secured the Claret Jug in one of the greatest Major performances in history.

That win sits alongside a remarkable 2013 season, where he became the first player to win both the FedEx Cup and the Race to Dubai in the same year.

Now beginning a new chapter on the Staysure Legends Tour, Stenson’s presence adds further depth and experience to an already strong field, as the Tour continues to bring together many of the game’s most accomplished players.

With a Major title, multiple victories worldwide and a competitive mindset that remains firmly intact, Stenson’s debut in Barbados offered an encouraging first step as he looks ahead to the rest of the season.
