The ISPS HANDA Senior Open will return to Royal Porthcawl in 2027 as the Welsh Government renews its support of the Championship.

Europe’s only Senior Major Championship will visit the South Wales venue for the fourth time when the 40th edition of the ISPS HANDA Senior Open takes place from July 22-25, 2027.

The venue offers stunning views across Swansea Bay to the Gower Peninsula and offers a true test of golf. It has previously hosted prestigious Championships such as the 2025 AIG Women’s Open, The Amateur Championship and the Walker Cup.

The ISPS HANDA Senior Open was held at Royal Porthcawl for the first time in 2014, four years after the country hosted its first Ryder Cup at The Celtic Manor Resort.

Germany’s Bernhard Langer, the most successful player in Senior Major Championship history, triumphed by an incredible 13 shots ahead of Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie, before winning for a second time at Royal Porthcawl in 2017.

In 2023 it was another German, Alex Čejka, who defeated Pádraig Harrington in a play-off as he landed his third Senior Major Championship title on a dramatic day in punishing conditions at Royal Porthcawl.

Edward Kitson, Championship Director of ISPS HANDA Senior Open, said: “We are thrilled to be returning to Royal Porthcawl for the ISPS HANDA Senior Open in 2027.

“This will be the fourth time that we have taken the Championship to Royal Porthcawl and it has provided us with many memorable moments in 2014, 2017 and 2023. The golf course is rated by many as one of the best in the country and we look forward to seeing the legends of the game compete there once again in 2027.”

“We are grateful to ISPS HANDA and our partners at The R&A, PGA TOUR Champions, Royal Porthcawl Golf Club and the Welsh Government for their help in taking the Championship back to Wales.”

Jack Sargeant, Welsh Government Minister for Sport, said: “It’s fantastic that we’re able to welcome the ISPS HANDA Senior Open back to Royal Porthcawl for a fourth time. Players and spectators have praised Wales and this world-class golf course previously, and we fully expect 2027 to be no different as our nation hosts another international field of the game’s greatest senior talent.

“This announcement builds on the outstanding success of last year’s AIG Women’s Open at Royal Porthcawl and is yet another milestone in Wales’ proud record of staging the most prestigious international golf tournaments. We look forward to showcasing the very best of Wales to a global audience once again.”

Dr Haruhisa Handa, ISPS HANDA Founder and Chairman, said: “We are delighted that the ISPS HANDA Senior Open is heading back to Royal Porthcawl, definitely one of the great golf courses in the world.

“At ISPS Handa, we believe deeply in the “power of sport” to inspire, to unite, and to transform lives. Golf, in particular, stands as a powerful tool for that vision to empower people of all backgrounds and abilities.

“The R&A, European Tour group, Welsh Government and Royal Porthcawl will deliver not only an exceptional championship, but also a celebration of what sport can achieve when it is driven by purpose and heart and we are proud to be the title sponsor of the Senior Open Championship.

Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, Chief Championships Officer at The R&A, said: “Royal Porthcawl is an important venue for The R&A and has an enviable track record of staging prestigious professional and amateur championships. We enjoyed a fantastic championship during the AIG Women’s Open last year and the players relished every moment of playing these wonderful links. We look forward to returning next year for the ISPA HANDA Senior Open for another memorable week of golf.”

Rhodri Lewis, Captain of Royal Porthcawl, commented: “The members of Royal Porthcawl are thrilled to welcome back this prestigious tournament and a world-class field to our great links. It represents a significant opportunity to showcase golf in Wales to a global audience and to bring the local golfing community together to witness some of the game’s most iconic players. Our thanks go to The R&A, the European Tour group, ISPS HANDA and the Welsh Government for their continued support, as well as to the many volunteers who will play an important part in delivering what is sure to be yet another memorable Championship at Royal Porthcawl.”

The ISPS HANDA Senior Open is co-sanctioned by the Staysure Legends Tour and PGA TOUR Champions and counts on both the Staysure Legends Tour Order of Merit and the Schwab Cup.
