The course overlooks the west coast of the island with stunning views out to the sea and towards the other Channel Islands. It’s a rugged and testing links layout that stretches to 6,712 yards and plays as a par 72.
Adilson da Silva sits top of the of the Order of Merit after winning the Riegler and Partner Legends in Austria and finishing tied-20th at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship in America.
“I couldn’t ask for better – it’s such a good to start,” says the Brazilian. “To already have a win under your belt makes such a difference mentally. I’m quite happy with my game. I’ve been practicing quite hard and I feel like it’s starting to pay off. My putting is coming together, and I feel like I’m hitting it quite nice.
“The course suits me, which mentally makes a big difference. I played here last year. I like links courses, my ball flight is quite low already, so I feel comfortable. The tricky thing is the greens and putting in the wind is not easy.”
No one in the field knows the course better than Ian Woosnam, who lives on Jersey: “It’s great to stay in your own bed 10 minutes from the golf course. It’s wonderful. The course is playing tricky as it’s a really difficult wind.
“You’ve only got to look at the views. It’s one of the best places in the world. People talk about Pebble Beach, but just look at this place. It’s incredible and the people here are fantastic.”
The 1991 Masters winner knows what it takes to score well at La Moye: “Trying to keep it on the fairway and out of the long rough. The rough was really juicy last week but it’s starting to dry out quite a bit. The secret is keeping it in play. They give us a pin sheet, but you don’t even want to look at it, just try and get it on the greens. It’ll be interesting to see what the scores are at the end of the week.”
Richard Green won this event last year, defeating Paul Lawrie in a play-off after they both finished on -10. The Australian is defending his title this week, but he hasn’t had the ideal preparation as his clubs got stuck in America and he was still waiting for them to arrive the night before the first round.
