Portugal welcomes back a Staysure Legends Tour event, the European professional golf circuit for players aged 50 and over, after 12 years, with a high-quality field.
The Portugal Legends Championship will be played from 30 October to 1 November at Pinheirinho Golf Course, in the municipality of Grândola, with a prize fund of €450,000.
The course, designed by Jorge Santana da Silva in the Comporta area of the Alentejo coast, has attracted many stars from golf’s more or less recent past, headed by two Major champions: New Zealand’s Michael Campbell and Scotland’s Paul Lawrie.
They are joined by 13 players who have represented Europe in the Ryder Cup, 8 of them on winning teams, most notably Denmark’s Thomas Bjørn and Ireland’s Paul McGinley, who won both as players and as captains. There is also a former member of the International team who played in the Presidents Cup (Michael Campbell).
The field includes 7 former Staysure Legends Tour Order of Merit winners (No. 1 in the rankings), including in 6 of the last eight years, as well as 7 of the current top
10 in the Staysure Legends Tour rankings, including No. 1, Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher.
Six 2026 Staysure Legends Tour winners will compete, including the only player to have claimed two titles this year, Sweden’s Johan Edfors.
In terms of career achievements, 48 players in the field have won at least one DP World Tour (formerly European Tour) title, and 39 have lifted at least one Staysure Legends Tour trophy.
It is against this strong and competitive field that Portugal’s Nuno Campino will compete, thanks to an invitation extended by the organisers after he was crowned national senior champion in 2026.
Nuno Campino is the only Portuguese player to have won the National Amateur Championship, the National Professional Championship and the National Senior Championship (for professionals) during his career. He has also served as national coach of the Portuguese Golf Federation.
The Portugal Legends Championship will be the 16th tournament on the official 2026 Staysure Legends Tour schedule (formerly the European Senior Tour).
In addition to being sanctioned by the European professional senior tour, the event is also recognised by the Portuguese Golf Federation and supported by VIC Properties, Turismo de Portugal and Turismo do Alentejo, with the collaboration of Sublime, Tangerine,Nevada Bobs, A1RServices, Record, SportTV, GolfTattoo and Cision.
Portugal had not hosted a regular-season Staysure Legends Tour event since the 2014 Portugal Senior Open at Vidago.
The Portugal Legends Championship will be the tour’s 10th event in Portugal. Between 2000 and 2014, the Staysure Legends Tour visited the Algarve, Cascais, the Azores, Sintra and Vidago (municipality of Chaves), before settling this year on the increasingly popular Alentejo coast, in the renowned Comporta area.
Admittedly, the Portugal Invitational was held this August, but that tournament, although also sanctioned by the Staysure Legends Tour, is primarily a PGA Tour Champions event.
The Portugal Legends Championship, by contrast, revives the legacy of the Portuguese Senior Open.
