Defending champion James Kingston will return to Ireland this week looking to recreate the magic of his dramatic victory 12 months ago when the Staysure Legends Tour visits Carton House for the OFX Irish Legends from July 10-12.
OFX once again lends its support as title sponsor of the tournament, one of the largest and most anticipated events on the Staysure Legends Tour calendar. Set against the backdrop of Dublin, Carton House enjoys a rich pedigree of staging elite professional golf. The venue has previously hosted a number of high-profile European Tour events, including the men’s and women’s Irish Open, as well as the Irish Legends in 2010, attracting world-class fields and delivering memorable moments featuring many of the game’s biggest names.
The tournament will feature another world-class field, including Major champions Michael Campbell, winner of the 2005 U.S. Open, and Paul Lawrie, who famously lifted the Claret Jug at The Open in 1999. They are joined by Ryder Cup stars Paul McGinley, Stephen Gallacher, Peter Baker, Phillip Price, Joakim Haeggman, Niclas Fasth, Thomas Levet and Jarmo Sandelin, alongside multiple DP World Tour and Staysure Legends Tour winners.
The South African produced one of the performances of the 2025 season at Mount Juliet, birdieing four of his final five holes and holing a clutch putt on the final green to secure a memorable victory. Returning to Ireland as defending champion, Kingston is relishing the opportunity to once again compete in front of Irish crowds.
“Returning to a tournament where you’ve played well the year before is always special, and coming back as defending champion makes it even more so,” said Kingston.
“I’ve always enjoyed playing golf in Ireland throughout my career, so to come back as defending champion makes it even more special. It brings back all the good memories from last year and gives you a little extra motivation heading into the week.”
Kingston will be joined at Carton House by a host of golfing greats, including 2014 Ryder Cup-winning captain Paul McGinley, who leads the home challenge at one of Ireland’s most prestigious golfing venues.
“It’s always exciting to play tournament golf in Ireland,” said McGinley. “The support from Irish fans is second to none, and there’s a real appreciation for the history of the game and the players who have been part of it. Carton House is a fantastic venue, and I’m looking forward to what should be a great week.”
McGinley also highlighted the strength of the competition on the Staysure Legends Tour.
“The standard on the Staysure Legends Tour is exceptionally high,” he said. “Week in, week out, you’re competing against Major champions, Ryder Cup players and golfers who have performed at the very highest level throughout their careers. That’s what makes it such a competitive and enjoyable environment.”
Several players arrive at Carton House in strong form following impressive performances at last week’s U.S. Senior Open Championship. Last month’s winner, Simon Griffiths made championship history during the opening round at Scioto Country Club by recording the 25th known hole-in-one in U.S. Senior Open history, while Andrew Marshall also impressed against one of the strongest fields in senior golf.
This week’s tournament also carries additional significance as it represents the final opportunity for players to secure qualification for the PGA Tour Champions’ Portugal Invitational at The Els Club in Vilamoura later this month, adding further incentive in what promises to be a fiercely contested week.
For Kingston, the move to Carton House presents a fresh challenge, but one he recalls well from his days competing on the DP World Tour.
“I remember playing at Carton House on what was then the European Tour and thinking it was one of the toughest golf courses I’d ever played,” he said.
“I know it’s a really good golf course and one that asks a lot of every part of your game. The last time I played there the conditions were incredibly tough, so it will be interesting to see how it plays this time around. Either way, I’m really looking forward to getting back to Carton House.”
One of the unique features of the Staysure Legends Tour is its renowned amateur playing experiences, giving golfers the rare opportunity to tee it up alongside Major champions, Ryder Cup captains and some of the game’s biggest names. It’s an experience unlike any other in golf and one that continues to set the Staysure Legends Tour apart.
McGinley believes that accessibility is one of the biggest strengths of the Tour:
“One of the great things about the Staysure Legends Tour is how accessible it is for fans,” he said. “You can walk the fairways with the players, watch Major champions and Ryder Cup stars compete and really experience the atmosphere of tournament golf.
“With free admission available throughout the week, I’d encourage anyone with an interest in the game to register via the Staysure Legends Tour website and come out to Carton House.”
For those looking to do more than just watch, the Staysure Legends Tour is also renowned for its amateur playing experiences, giving golfers the rare opportunity to tee it up alongside Major champions, Ryder Cup captains and some of the game’s biggest names.
