Jean Hugo continued his remarkable run of form with a third Staysure Legends Tour victory in as many starts, firing a bogey-free final-round 65 to win the Champions UK plc European Senior Masters at La Manga Club.
The South African, who began the final day three shots behind overnight leader Van Phillips, recorded eight birdies to finish on 19-under-par and secure a one-shot victory over the Englishman, who narrowly missed an eagle putt at the final hole to force a play-off.
The victory completes an extraordinary hat-trick for Hugo, who has now won on each of his three Staysure Legends Tour appearances, following triumphs at the Reignwood Legends Championship in China and Portugal Legends Championship at Pinheirinho.
India’s Jeev Milkha Singh finished 3rd on 17-under-par following a closing 68, with Chile’s Felipe Aguilar a shot further back in 4th after a final-round 70.
“I think I got off to a great start,” said Hugo. “I was a few behind after yesterday, so the game plan was just to get in there as quickly as possible and try to catch the leaders before the turn. I think everything worked well.
“I don’t think I missed many greens this week, so the long game was good and I made the putts I needed to make today.”
Hugo wasted little time making his move in Sunday’s final round, carding three consecutive birdies from the 2nd before another at the 6th brought him level with Phillips at 15-under-par.
Aguilar, meanwhile, had made a flying start of his own. The two-time DP World Tour winner birdied the 1st and 4th before moving into a share of the lead with a birdie at the 6th. Another at the 8th gave the Chilean the outright advantage, and he reached 17-under-par at the turn to take control of a tightly contested leaderboard.
However, the momentum shifted on the back nine. Aguilar dropped shots at the 10th, 11th and 12th, slipping out of contention and opening the door for Hugo and Phillips. An eagle at the 18th helped him recover to 16-under-par.
Hugo, who had reached 16-under-par with a birdie at the 9th, made his decisive move with consecutive birdies at the 14th and 15th to move to 18-under-par. A further birdie at the par-five 18th completed a superb closing 65 and established the clubhouse target at 19-under-par.
“I like watching leaderboards,” Hugo said. “It keeps me calm or gets me motivated, depending on the situation. Coming in with a few to go, it was good to have the lead because there are quite a few tough holes coming back in. It was nice not having to chase on some of those holes.”
Phillips, who had led after each of the opening two rounds, refused to relinquish his challenge. The Englishman, chasing a second Staysure Legends Tour title following his 2024 WINSTONgolf Senior Open triumph, arrived at the 18th needing an eagle to force a play-off.
A magnificent approach to six feet gave him the opportunity to extend the contest, but his eagle putt narrowly missed. He tapped in for birdie to sign for a four-under-par 69 and finish runner-up on 18-under-par.
For Hugo, the latest victory represents a remarkable turnaround after missing out on playing rights at Qualifying School earlier this year. His breakthrough victory in China secured his place on Tour, and successive wins in Portugal and Spain have firmly established him among the leading contenders on the Road to Cambodia.
“I think China helped a lot,” Hugo added. “It was a tough golf course and it suited me with the length I still have. That was a bit of validation after missing out at Tour School at the beginning of the year. It was an important week for me.
“I just wanted to have a solid season and not have to go back to Tour School in January. That was my main goal.”
Behind the leading quartet, Matthew Cort continued his impressive run of results with a closing 69 to finish 5th on 15-under-par, while Adilson da Silva took 6th on 14-under-par following a five-under-par 68.
Sweden’s Michael Jonzon, 1999 Open Champion Paul Lawrie and Road to Cambodia leader Stephen Gallacher shared 7th place on 13-under-par. Jonzon carded a six-under-par 67, while Lawrie and Gallacher signed for matching 69s.
Hugo’s third victory moves him into 5th place on the Road to Cambodia Order of Merit, with Gallacher retaining his position at the summit as the race to become the 2026 Staysure Legends Tour champion enters its final stretch.
The Tour now heads to Asia for the final three events of the season, beginning with the Vietnam Legends Championship at PGA Golf Club Phan Thiet from 20–22 November.
