The Staysure Legends Tour welcomes a Major champion to its ranks this month, as Henrik Stenson makes his debut at the Barbados Legends hosted by Ian Woosnam.
One of Europe’s most recognisable figures of the modern era, the 2016 Open champion and former European No.1 arrives at the spectacular Apes Hill with one of the most impressive CVs in world golf. His debut adds another layer of quality to a field that continues to grow in strength, bringing together players who have shaped the game over the past few decades.
“I’m looking forward to getting out there again and seeing some of the guys I’ve played with over the years. There are a lot of familiar faces and friends, so it’ll be nice to be back in that environment – I’m excited to play a first event on the Staysure Legends Tour. I haven’t been to Barbados for 20 years but it’s a beautiful place and the Apes Hill course looks incredible,” said Stenson.
“I still feel like I’ve got something to give on the competitive side,” Stenson added. “If you can get yourself into those positions, the belief is still there. I’ve always been a competitor, and that doesn’t really go away. I guess time will tell – what game I can bring, what game the other guys will bring, and we’ll see where it meets.”
Stenson’s career-defining moment came at the Open Championship at Royal Troon in 2016, where he produced one of the great performances in Major history. A closing 63 secured the Claret Jug and a record total of 264, finishing 20-under-par after a gripping final-day battle with Phil Mickelson.
That win sits at the heart of a career built on consistency at the very highest level. In 2013, Stenson made history by becoming the first player to win both the FedEx Cup and the Race to Dubai in the same season – a rare achievement that underlined his status among the world’s best. He has recorded six PGA TOUR victories and 11 DP World Tour wins, and for long stretches was a regular presence at the very top of the game.
Stenson became one of the most dependable players in elite golf – the kind of player who could be relied upon in the biggest moments. That was just as evident in the Ryder Cup, where he represented Europe five times and was part of winning teams in 2006, 2014 and 2018.
He lined up in that 2014 victory alongside fellow Staysure Legends Tour player Jamie Donaldson, who famously hit the shot that secured the winning point at Gleneagles. Donaldson has already made his mark this season with victory at the Staysure Marbella Legends in February – a reminder of the level of player now competing week in, week out on the Tour.
Now, Stenson turns his attention to a new chapter in Barbados, making his first appearance on the Staysure Legends Tour at one of the most distinctive stops on the schedule. Few events combine top-level competition and destination quite like the Barbados Legends, which returns to the stunning Apes Hill in 2026.
Host Ian Woosnam is looking forward to welcoming Stenson to the event.
“Welcoming Henrik to Apes Hill will be a wonderful moment as he makes his Legends Tour debut here in Barbados,” said Woosnam. “Captaining Europe in the 2006 Ryder Cup was one of the proudest times of my career and to be reunited on the golf course 20 years later with the man who holed the winning putt that year will be truly special.
“From the moment we first brought the Staysure Legends Tour to Apes Hill, the players recognised it as something unique. Each year the event has grown in stature and it is also a wonderful setting to bring amateurs into the experience – competitive golf in a world-class environment, but with the warmth and hospitality Barbados is known for.”
Few stops on the calendar combine elite golf and destination quite like the Barbados Legends, returning to Apes Hill in 2026. Set 1,000 feet above sea level, Apes Hill offers panoramic ocean views, cooling trade winds and a modern layout that rewards confident shot-making. With fast-running fairways and sculpted greens, the course provides a dynamic and often unpredictable test, ensuring a compelling contest throughout the week. It has quickly become a firm favourite among players and fans alike.
The strength of the field reflects the growing appeal of the event, with Stenson joined by a number of Major champions, Ryder Cup Captains and European Tour winners, as well as defending champion Scott Hend, who returns after his victory last year. Among them are 1999 Open champion Paul Lawrie, 2005 US Open winner Michael Campbell and 1991 Masters champion Ian Woosnam.
Stenson’s Ryder Cup teammates Jamie Donaldson and Stephen Gallacher, who were part of Europe’s victorious side in 2014, also feature alongside Joakim Haeggman, who represented Europe in the 1993 Ryder Cup, adding further depth and experience to a line-up that continues to highlight the quality and competitiveness of the Staysure Legends Tour.
Barbados is also one of the events to offer The Legends Experience, giving amateurs the rare chance to tee it up alongside players such as Stenson in tournament conditions, sharing the fairways with a Major champion in a truly unique setting.
With a Major title, a historic double on both sides of the Atlantic, and a career built on delivering under pressure, Stenson’s debut in Barbados is one to watch.
