Jamie Donaldson recorded the best senior Major finish of his career at the U.S. Senior Open Championship after closing with a two-under-par 68 to finish tied fifth at Scioto Country Club in Ohio.
The Staysure Marbella Legends champion capped an impressive week against one of the strongest fields in senior golf, with the Welshman, who famously secured the winning point for Europe at the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles to secure a place among the championship’s leading contenders.
Padraig Harrington successfully defended his U.S. Senior Open title after a brilliant final-round 66 moved the Irishman to 12-under-par for the championship, four shots clear of Stewart Cink. George McNeill completed an impressive championship debut in third place on six-under-par, while fellow Ryder Cup star Ian Poulter marked his own U.S. Senior Open debut with a fourth-place finish at five-under-par.
Reflecting on his historic third U.S. Senior Open title, Harrington said:
“I’ve done a few back-to-backs in my career, so I’m happy about that, back-to-back Opens back in the day. There is a lot of pressure when you come in as a defending champion. I was very tentative the first day, very cautious. I got lucky that I finished strong and made a couple of birdies.”
Donaldson’s achievement was made all the more impressive by the fact that he had earned his place in the field through both local and final qualifying. He became one of only two players to come through that route and finish inside the top 15, earning an exemption into next year’s championship in the process.
Donaldson’s performance continues a strong first season on the Staysure Legends Tour, having already claimed victory at the Staysure Marbella Legends earlier this year. The former Ryder Cup star once again demonstrated the composure and resilience that have defined a career spanning more than three decades at the highest level of the game.
Elsewhere, Miguel Angel Jiménez recorded another top-10 finish, closing with a final-round 73 to finish tied eighth after beginning the day just three shots off the lead. The Spaniard’s performance continues an impressive campaign that has already included a fourth-place finish at the Staysure Marbella Legends.
Andrew Marshall also produced a strong performance to finish tied 26th after a closing 71, while Simon Griffiths completed an impressive week at one-over-par in tied 31st. The Englishman, who shared second place after the opening round, produced one of the moments of the championship when he made a hole-in-one at the par-three 17th on Thursday. The ace was the 25th known hole-in-one in U.S. Senior Open Championship history and added another memorable chapter to an impressive week for the recent Staysure Legends Tour winner.
With Donaldson recording a career-best senior Major finish, Jiménez securing another Major championship top-10 and strong performances from Marshall and Griffiths, the Staysure Legends Tour was once again strongly represented on one of golf’s biggest stages.
Attention now turns to Carton House and this week’s OFX Irish Legends, where many of the Tour’s leading players will look to continue their strong form on the Staysure Legends Tour.
