James Kingston v Greig Hutcheon
James Kingston and Greig Hutcheon were off out in the first semi-final at Hanbury Manor on Sunday morning.
The South African won the opening hole, but Hutcheon would win three of the next five holes to sit two-up through seven holes played.
It was then the turn of Kingston to go on a run though, winning three consecutive holes to thew turn, and while Hutcheon won the 10th hole, another run from Kingston winning four of the next six holes was enough for him to seal a 4&2 victory and a place in the Paul Lawrie Match Play final!
“I really played nicely today, Greg was a great opponent and an absolute gentleman.
“We had a nice tussle. a lot of holes got exchanged and it was one up, one down, one up, one down all the time.
“But then on the back nine, I really started playing nicely. Drove the ball extremely well and just hit the right shots at the right time. I think obviously it put him under pressure, so he had to force the issue and made a mistake or two, which then just made it a little easier.”
Bradley Dredge v Angel Cabrera
The second semi-final saw Bradley Dredge taking on two-time Major winner Angel Cabrera.
Dredge won a Legends Tour title on this course last year, a track he clearly enjoys and one which suits his game, while the 2007 US Open and 2009 Masters Champion Cabrera was the highest seed left in the tournament.
The pair were in a tight match, which was all tied through 13 holes before the Argentinian won three of the next four holes to win the match 3&1.
“I’m very happy to win because I didn’t play good today. I think I have to get ready this afternoon.
“Bradley is a great player. I played with him many times and I knew I had to play well if I was going to beat him.”
On facing Kingston in the final, Angel said: “I know he is a good player, he’s a very good player – but I’m confident!”
The final of the Paul Lawrie Match Play presented by Petsure at Hanbury Manor Marriott Hotel and Country Club tee’s off at 12:45pm.
